My Background

Mrs. Jackson graduated with great distinction from the Academy of Richmond County in 1981. At the College of Wiliam and Mary in Virginia, she was selected by the President of the College to serve as a President’s Aide, a group of students who advised the president about various matters related to campus life. She also served the Mu Upsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated as their president.  She was the first student at William & Mary to complete an interdisciplinary major in Public Policy.  A recipient of the Alfred P. Sloan/Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management Fellowship, she earned a master’s degree in Public Policy with a concentration in Management from Duke University.

Mrs. Jackson began her local government career in Prince George’s County, MD. She furthered her professional development by serving the City of Albany, GA as Assistant City Manager and later City Manager, the first woman in either role. She distinguished herself by handling public information duties and proving a reassuring voice during a flood crisis that caused two thirds of the residents of the county to evacuate from their homes. Afterwards,  in partnership with the City Commission, staff, and the federal government, shepherded the city through redevelopment of the community that improved the quality of housing and increased the percentage of homeownership. These efforts resulted in her being named one of the 100 Most Influential Georgians by  Georgia Trend Magazine.

In Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, NC, she was a member of the County’s Executive Leadership Team. She is most proud of efforts to strengthen services provided to survivors of domestic violence, veterans, and vulnerable children and families.

Mrs. Jackson was the first woman to oversee day to day operations of our Augusta-Richmond  consolidated government. In that role, she was the Augusta Commission’s liaison to the State of Georgia to develop the Nathan Deal Campus for Innovation. She also worked with staff and the Commission to bring significant private investment to the Bethlehem neighborhood.

She is the principal of Janice Allen Jackson & Associates, LLC, which provides services to government and non-profit organizations. She is also a co-founder of CARE,LLC, formed with three neighbors to revitalize the historic Hornsby Subdivision.

She is also creator and host of the Local Matters Podcast of Georgia, designed to help people become more confident voters and more engaged citizens. Local Matters has positioned her as a thought leader in local government, and its unbiased discussion of issues has been used to shape policy discussion in the United States Senate.

The recipient of numerous awards, Mrs. Jackson has been designated as a Baxter-Ward Fellow by the College of William & Mary, and she is a member of the Academy of Richmond County Hall of Fame.

She is married to Joe L. Jackson, and the mother of Miles and Caroline Jackson. She also has two bonus daughters, Serenity and Kenyada. She is a member of the Good Shepherd Baptist Church and the Rotary Club of Augusta.
